Senior tax exemption on hold

By Sherri Ellington Lamar County seniors can stop calling the tax assessor’s office about the newly proposed school tax exemption the board of education put into motion. It is still in the study stages and the earliest it can take effect is 2014. It is not available now. ’We’ve been getting a lot of calls about this exemption,’ said chief appraiser Jeannie Haddock. ‘There are about three steps that have to happen before this will be in effect. I know the BOE has to approve (the final version). The county commission, then the General Assembly then the voters of the county have to do so too.’ Haddock also thinks the final age approved is going to be 70, not 65, and the total exemption phased in over a period of a couple of years. ’People need to know it hasn’t been approved yet,’ she said. ‘We have people calling who want the additional exemption now.’
