Sex offender arrested after standoff

A convicted sex offender was arrested after a tense standoff Friday afternoon at a duplex located at 378 Hwy. 36 West – just behind Flash Foods. Sheriff’s deputies in tactical gear and brandishing automatic rifles swarmed the duplex after what was originally a suicide threat called in from the home. Deputies evacuated women and children from a duplex located behind the one from which the suspect refused to surrender. Eventually, tear gas was shot into the residence and Charles Donald Ward, 63, emerged with his hands up and was taken into custody. Ward is a registered sex offender who was convicted of enticing a child for indecent purposes on Oct. 21, 1999. More charges are pending after Friday’s incident. No one else was in Ward’s duplex and no injuries were reported during the incident that lasted about 90 minutes. For more, see the 4.11.17 print edition of The Herald Gazette.
