Lamar deputies were summoned for an urgent response to Reliable Mart Wednesday morning regarding a fugitive who was allegedly resisting arrest and fighting with deputies. Customers inside the store captured the takedown of the suspect, 30-year-old Caweisi Darnoz Lavelle, on video. Sheriff Brad White reported Wednesday he is aware of the video which is inside this open thread. Sheriff White said he has placed Sgt. Shannon Williamson, on whom he has never had a complaint, on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Lavelle had outstanding warrants from another county for obstruction of an officer when he was spotted at the store. One deputy tried to arrest him and Lavelle resisted, triggering the urgent response call which brought multiple officers to the scene, according to White. One deputy was injured in the melee, White said. Lavelle was uninjured and charged with felony obstruction and giving a false name. Sheriff White said Lavelle had one cuff locked on a wrist and swung the other as a weapon at officers. Sgt. Williamson can be seen entering the fray and kicking at Lavelle. White said Williamson reported he was trying to sweep Lavelle’s arm out from under him so he would be flat on his stomach for cuffing ”We are aware of the video circulating on social media. We have opened an internal investigation and are attempting to obtain additional video. Lavelle is no stranger to law enforcement. His criminal history is five pages long. His Lamar arrest record goes back to 2005 when he was charged with driving without a license. In 2010 he was arrested for DUI, weaving over the roadway, no license and giving a false name. Additional arrests are recorded in July 2011, March 2012, June 2012, April 2014, September 2015 and July 2017 for probation violations, child molestation, possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, giving a false name, driving without a license, obstruction and simple battery.
