Shooting at Jr. Food Mart leaves one dead

A man was shot to death at Jr. Food Mart on College Drive in Barnesville late Thursday after an altercation. UPDATE: The Herald-Gazette has learned from sources the victim in the shooting was Christopher Martin Stepanski, 26 of Holmes Street in Barnesville. His body has been taken to the GBI crime lab for autopsy. The alleged shooter, Frenchie Fambro, later turned himself in at the local jail. The victim is reportedly a white male. The clerk on duty at the time heard gunfire and called 911. The incident happened at 11:15 p.m. The GBI worked the scene all night but the store is open for business as usual now. Coroner Jim Smith reported Thursday he is out of town and that deputy coroner Cindy Killingsworth worked the scene. Smith did not have the name of the victim. According to Herald-Gazette arrest records, Stepanski was arrested earlier this month for DUI, weaving over the roadway, fleeing and attempting to elude and open container violation. In June, 2010 he was arrested for failure to stop at an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and hit and run. In a news release issued at 1 p.m., Lt. Al Moltrum of the Barnesvile Police Department reported officers responded to the store at 11:09 p.m. and found Stepanski on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to Spalding Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:53 p.m. Moltrum said Fambro and Stepanski engaged in a verbal and physical altercation in front of numerous witnesses. Based on testimony from those witnesses, Fambro has been charged with murder, Moltrum added.
