During the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 1, officers from the Griffin Police Department responded to Spalding Regional Medical Center ER in reference to a subject that had been shot.The victim was identified as Justin Melton of Griffin. Melton told Officers that he was at the Super Speedway located at 678 N. Expressway in Griffin with some friends around 2:40 a.m. He further stated that while in the parking lot he approached a black vehicle that had several males in it and was speaking with them. During the conversation a verbal altercation occurred at which time one of the subjects in the vehicle brandished an unknown caliber pistol and shot Melton in the upper right side. The vehicle and suspects then fled the scene. One of Melton’s friends that was inside the store came outside after hearing a loud pop and discovered that Melton had been shot. Melton’s friends then put him in a car and transported him to the ER. Inv. Keith Dryden and Crime Scene Investigator Chris Wilson responded to the scene and began a preliminary investigation. After interviewing several people and reviewing Super Speedway’s surveillance camera’s solid leads on the suspects were developed. At the time of this release an arrest is pending. The Victim was treated and released from the ER early this morning and is going to recover from his injuries.
