Smith elected to international civil rights board

Merrill Smith Jr., son of Milner residents Mattie and Merrill Smith Sr., was elected to the board of The International Association of Official Human Rights Agency of Washington, D.C. during their recent meeting in Birmingham, Alabama. Smith earned a bachelor degree in 1983 from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He also has a Lean Six Sigma Certificate from Villanova University. IAOHRA is a private non-profit corporation headquartered in Washington, D.C. The association was founded in 1949 in New York at the annual meeting of Human Rights Agencies from four states, which was referred to as the ‘The Conference of Four State Commissions.’ IAOHRA’s membership presently consists of approximately 160 human rights agencies in the United States and Canada. The goals of IAOHRA are to foster human and intergroup relations, to enhance human rights practices under law and to promote civil and human rights around the world. The association has provided leadership in the development and enforcement of needed statutes and ordinanceslocal, state, and federal – to safeguard the human and civil rights of all people.
