The high school soccer teams remained perfect in region play with a sweep of Bleckley County. Both squads saw long winning streaks come to an end with losses at non-region rival Pike County. The Lady Trojans took a 6-0 win in Cochran behind a three goal hat trick by Katie Jo Daniel. Lamar opened the scoring on a beautiful play as Sydney Tenney took the ball down the right side of the field, drew a couple of defenders out of the middle and crossed the ball to the back side of the goal. Madison Howard was waiting to one touch it into the goal. Tenney and Alexis Bedgood also netted scores in the match. In Zebulon, Pike took a 2-0 first half lead and extended the score to 4-0 in the second half before Daniel scored a couple of goals for the Lady Trojans. It was too little, too late. The Lady Pirates won the match 4-2, halting Lamar’s eight game winning streak. The Trojans ran their own win streak to seven straight with a 3-0 at Bleckley. Tyler Scandrett, Chase Bennett and Dylan Johnson each scored for Lamar. Defense was the story of the match as the Trojans completely shut down the Royal offense. Alex Guzman’s early goal gave Lamar a lead at Pike but the Trojans were unable to generate any more offense. The Pirates netted three goals to take a 3-1 win. Lamar honored the memory of 2012 graduate and soccer alum Taylor Davis who died from leukemia July 10, 2013 by retiring his jersey number 15 when it hosted Monticello at Trojan Field. All proceeds from the evening were donated to Relay For Life in Taylor’s memory. ’Taylor would be so proud,’ said his mother Joanne Davis. ‘I found out last week the high school soccer team plans on retiring Taylor’s jersey during the April 8 Relay for Life game. Of course I cried. Taylor so loved playing and being part of such a wonderful group of players and staff. Lamar County has been such a blessing in my boys’ lives.’
