Soldier’s remains coming home from Korea after 62 years

Using DNA, Army officials have identified and are shipping home the remains of a Griffin soldier who was killed in action while battling Chinese troops on the Manchurian border near the Chosin Reservoir and Yalu River on December 12, 1950. The family of PFC. Bobby Byars was notified of his death on January 15, 1951. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart among other medals. From 1990 to 1994, 208 boxes of human remains were shipped by the Koreans back to the United States. Byars’ remains were found in six of those boxes, according to Bill Taylor of WKEU. Byars’ remains will arrive at the Atlanta airport on February 14. He will be escorted back to Griffin for funeral services set for February 16. Heritage Funeral Home of Griffin will handle the funeral.
