A Spalding County deputy has been fired after allegedly supplying tobacco products to inmates at the Spalding jail.From sheriff Wendell Beam:Spalding County Deputy Sheriff Mathew Joseph Meeks age 28 of 720 South Center Street, Thomaston, Georgia was arrested Saturday, January 4, 2014, and charged with Violation of Oath of Office and Furnishing Items Prohibited for Possession by Inmates. The arrest was a result of an investigation conducted by the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division. The investigation revealed Deputy Meeks was receiving payment for furnishing cigarettes to inmates at the Spalding County Jail. Deputy Meeks was arrested while on duty Saturday, January 4, 2014. He was terminated immediately as an employee of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Meeks was released on a $7006.00 bond. Mr. Meeks had been employed with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office for 2-1/2 years.
