Spalding investigators reopen 1999 murder investigation

Spalding County investigators have reopened their investigation into the September 1, 1999 slaying of Abdelaziz Abuzaidieh. From Sheriff Wendell Beam: The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office has re-opened the September 1, 1999 murder of Mr. Abdelaziz Abuzaidieh. During the early morning hours of September 1, 1999 units of the Griffin Fire Department and patrol units of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office responded to a grass fire on N. Hill Street just south of Northside Drive. When units arrived they located the brush fire and as they began to extinguish the fire they located a vehicle fully engulfed by flames. After the fire was extinguished fire fighters located a body later identified as Mr. Abuzaidieh. An autopsy determined that Mr. Abuzaidieh had been shot and a homicide investigation began. During the investigation it was determined from the reconstruction of the Crime Scene that Mr. Abu who was the owner of the Chevron Station located at 1251 N. Hill Street had been shot while in his vehicle as he was leaving his business. The investigation into this homicide continued until all leads had been exhausted and the case became ‘cold’. Investigator’s with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office have received new information into the person(s) responsible for this murder and have re-opened the case.
