Spalding sheriff in critical condition; patrol car t-boned by grandson’s Bronco

Spalding County sheriff Dee Stewart was seriously injured Thursday when his patrol car was struck on the passenger side by a Ford Bronco driven by his grandson Chad Gasaway, an officer at the sheriff’s department. Gasaway and Stewart are the brother and grandfather of Amy Jackson. She is the secretary of Barnesville First United Methodist Church. Stewart was on patrol. When his car pulled off Moose Lodge Road and was crossing US 19/41, it was T-boned on the passenger side by a vehicle driven by his grandson, according to Captain Tony Ranieri of the Sheriff’s Department. Stewart was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition. Gassaway was off duty in his personal vehicle at the time of the accident and was on his way home for the day. Stewart was in stable but critical condition Thursday evening. Gassaway was taken to Spalding Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident, Ranieri said.
