SPLOST advance voting underway

Advance voting in the March 21 SPLOST referendum got underway here last week and runs through March 17. Ballots may be cast daily at the elections board office in the county annex on Thomaston Street. During the first week, voters cast 54 advance ballots and elections superintendent Anita Reid and her staff sent out 92 absentee ballots. If voters approve, the one percent local option sales tax will be continued for not longer than six years. It is expected to generate $9.4 million to be split between Lamar County and its municipalities. The county would receive just under $5.4 million with about $3.6 million earmarked for Barnesville. Milner expects to receive $375,000 with Aldora getting about $94,000. Major projects include a new county animal shelter and the development of Liberty Hill Park on Hwy. 36 East. Equipment and water and sewer infrastructure will get the majority of the funds. New patrol cars for the sheriff’s department and improvements at the Milner police station are in the plans as are upgrades to fire and road department equipment. The county plans improvements to over 20 miles of local roads and repair of the bridge on Piedmont Road.
