Storm passes; trees, power lines down

Heavy rain, some hail and high winds roared through Lamar Monday evening, downing trees and power lines. Southern Rivers Energy has power outages all across its service area. Sheriff Brad White said calls were coming in from all over the county about downed trees and lines blocking roads. The worst damage was south of Barnesville near the go-kart track on Hwy. 36 West, the sheriff said. Crews were busy clearing roads at 9 p.m. Pike County reported a possible tornado touchdown, losing two barns and one home. A storm-related crash on Hwy. 19 North there killed at least one person. Meanwhile, Southern Rivers spokesperson Erin Cook says her crews are “slammed”. ”To put it simply, we are slammed. As of 8:45 we have over 6200 members without power system-wide with large numbers in Meriwether, Pike, Lamar and Monroe counties. We are still assessing the damage to our system and all of our crews are working to get power restored as quickly and safely as possible. We cannot begin to estimate a time frame for complete restoration right now. As you can imagine, trying to repair the damage in weather like this is a challenge.
