Storm strands local mission team in Haiti

By Kay S. Pedrotti Three members of Rock Springs Church are in a safe house near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, stranded by Tropical Storm Isaac, according to Cameron Shiflett, executive pastor. The men — Donald Mapp, Ryan Christopher and Justin Weldon — arrived in Haiti Aug. 18 and have been rebuilding a Primitive Baptist church, school and orphanage destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. Their work is nearly complete, Shiflett said, but they “have vowed to stay longer if there is more devastation they can help with.” After speaking with them today, Shiflett said, “They are not panicked or worried at all, only concerned because there are so many people still living in tents in bare-dirt areas. A lot of rain could cause treacherous results, like destruction of what shelter they have, flash floods or dangerous sanitary conditions.” A flight out has been scheduled for them Saturday, Aug. 25, if possible, with a backup on Thursday Aug. 30. ”We’re proud of them,” said Shiflett. “They have worked really hard ‘slinging blocks’ for these buildings, and they will work more if needed.”
