Barnesville police officials are crediting good police work by one of their officers for solving a string of storage unit thefts here.Officer Mark Evans was on regular patrol at about 1:30 a.m. April 12 when he noticed a van with its motor running at Southern Securities on Highway 341 near Huddle House. As Evans approached an open storage unit, a man emerged. As it turns out, the suspect had been entering empty storage units at area storage facilities, removing interior bolts and entering adjacent units to steal items. He would then move the stolen property to a unit he had access to.The suspect, 35-year-old Scott Thomas Vincent of 238 Liberty Bell Lane in north Lamar, is charged with burglary and four counts of theft by receiving stolen property. More charges will likely be forthcoming, according to investigator Al Moltrum.’Thanks to Officer Evans’ alertness, we have solved four thefts. We have more property at the department we think was stolen. Those who have suffered such thefts should contact us at 358-1244,’ Moltrum said.Evans is the community’s reigning law enforcement officer of the year.
