Summer winding down for teachers, students

Lamar County schools will open at the end of July with school starting Friday, July 29. Students and parents will meet with teachers and find their way to new classrooms during Open House Wednesday, July 27 from 2-6 p.m. at all schools. The school’s 2016-17 calendar will include 180 days of instruction with 10 professional days for teachers and administrative staff. Two JumpStart Days were scheduled for students entering sixth and ninth grades. For high school freshmen, the orientation JumpStart Day will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 21. For students entering sixth grade, the JumpStart Day was held on Monday, July 18 at the middle school. Students who take part in the JumpStart Days are able to meet their teachers, get a schedule before Open House, go on a scavenger hunt to learn about the school and find out where all of their classes are. They can also purchase lockers and take care of other items that may cause stress on the first days of school. Parents can drop their children off in front of the middle school and teachers will be waiting to welcome them. Students will attend classes each day in August with two days off Sept. 5 and 6 for Labor Day. Their next break will be a full week for fall break from Oct. 10 to 14. They will have another week off in November for Thanksgiving break from Nov. 21 to 25. Christmas break will start Dec. 19 through 30 with two teacher planning days to start the New Year Jan. 2 and 3. The students’ next extended break will be winter break from Feb. 20 to 24. A March 20 planning day will be the only off day in the month of March. Spring break will be from April 3 through 7. Graduation will be May 27 with two days of post planning set for May 30 and 31.
