Sumner trial opens with bombshell

Before the jury was even seated, a surprising development arose in the Bobbie Jo Sumner trial Monday at the Monroe County courthouse. Assistant district attorney James Moss told Judge Tommy Wilson that a key witness and Sumner’s “on again, off again boyfriend” Robert King died last week of a heart attack. His body has been cremated. King was at one point charged in Spalding County with regard to the case. Moss said King helped Sumner move and hide her vehicle and cover up her involvement in the death of Alexandra Noel Desir. Defense attorney Bubba Head noted the charges against King had been dropped prior to his death. At issue was if King’s statements to a state trooper prior to his death are admissible. Head said his defense will center on Sumner’s insistence she did not know she hit a human being.
