A small army of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies gathered before dawn this morning at the old Barnesville Academy gym in anticipation of a well-orchestrated sweep to remove known drug dealers from the streets of Barnesville-Lamar County. The phalanx included officers from the Barnesville Police Dept., Lamar County sheriff’s office, Narcotics Task Force, Drug Enforcement Administration, GBI, U.S. Marshall’s Service and officers from surrounding cities and counties.By daybreak the arrests had begun. Among the first areas hit were those along Roberts and Northridge roads. The action later moved to the area of the vast housing projects in Barnesville. With each stop came another arrest, another car impoundment and more barking from the drug enforcement dogs. Homes were hit by large teams of officers in an effort to discourage resistance. No injuries were reported by 8:30 a.m.The identities of those arrested are expected to be released this afternoon. Sheriff Larry Waller indicated multiple arrest and search warrants were involved.More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.
