Suspect identified; DA says killing tied to drugs

The man charged in connection with the January 30 shooting death of 56-year-old Charles G. Adams here has been identified as Ronald Smith. Smith, 28, has been charged with murder and malice murder. District attorney Richard Milam reported today the shooting was drug-related. ”All indications are that the shooting was very much related to the distribution and use of illegal drugs in Lamar County,” Milam said. The district attorney also praised the multi-jurisdictional cooperation at the crime scene. “The investigation focused the efforts of several law enforcement agencies – local and state. Everyone worked together and there were no turf wars,” he said. Smith served three months in the Al Burruss boot camp in Forsyth in 2007 on charges of possession of methamphetamine. After a search warrant was issued for Smith’s residence at 501 Grove Street Friday, a gun thought to be the murder weapon was recovered. Drug paraphernalia, including syringes, were also found during the course of the investigation.
