SWA still a tangled mess; emergency meeting called for Friday night

During the week that was supposed to see a new members appointed, the board of directors of the Lamar County Regional Solid Waste Authority (SWA) remains a tangled mess.

On Monday, the Milner city council was to name its two members to the new board as ordered by special master John F. Kennedy. It unanimously voted to appoint newly-elected mayor Craig Timmons to the board to replace Tausha Grose. Council members Chris Eady and Emily Vining were absent.

Milner did not appoint its second member. Newly-elected city councilman Ryan Lewis said the old SWA board has appealed the special master’s ruling and Judge Tommy Wilson had not signed off on Kennedy’s orders.

On Tuesday night, the county commission voted unanimously to reappoint commissioner Ashley Gilles to the SWA board following an executive session. Both current board member commissioner Truman Boyle and commissioner Jason Lovett wanted the second seat.

Chairman Ryran Traylor ended up breaking a 2-2 tie and Boyle was reappointed on a 3-2 vote.

On Wednesday afternoon, Gilles provided notice that the SWA board will hold an emergency meeting Friday at 6 p.m. at the courthouse. There is much speculation as to which current and former board members will be in attendance.

Gilles questioned who had ordered legal counsel to appeal Kennedy’s orders as the matter was not voted on at a legally-called SWA board meeting.
