Sweet 16 soccer playoff action: Girls win 2-0. Boys win 4-1

The LC soccer teams swept Worth County in a first round doubleheader here Friday night and roll into the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA Class AA state soccer tournament this week. Both LC teams are #1 seeds.

The #6 Lady Trojans (16-5, 10-0) host unranked Dade County (11-5-1, 8-4) Wednesday. First touch is set for 5:30 p.m. at Trojan Field. Dade is the #3 seed from Region 7-AA. They topped #10 Callaway 2-1 in the first round last week.

The Wolverines have outscored opponents 40-20. The Lady Trojans have a scoring edge of 85-27 for the season.

In round one, LC walloped Worth County 7-0. Speedy Samiya Smith had four goals and an assist to pace the Lady Trojan attack. Armani Flewellen had a goal and two assists while Alaina Cato and Giada Ritch had one goal each.

Adding single assists were Cara Bishop, Maci-Lauren Lanier and Morgan Strickland.

TROJANS:

The unranked Trojans (15-6, 10-0) battle #9 Callaway (15-2-1, 4-2)) Thursday at 6 p.m. at Trojan Field. LC is the #1 seed from Region 3-AA. The Cavaliers are the #2 seed from Region 5AA. They eliminated Model 2-1 in round one.

The Cavs are on a six-game winning streak and have outscored opponents 80-20. The Trojans are on a five-game winning streak and have outscored opponents 101-40. LC’s freshman striker Caleb Miller is ranked #6 among freshmen goal scorers in the nation with 20 goals headed into Thursday’s action, according to MaxPreps.

Miller certainly looked the part Friday night as he whipped in five goals to lead LC to a 9-4 win over Worth County. Justin Brannan added two goals and an assist. Josh Moore had a goal and three assists. Joe Mauney had a single goal on a PK on his birthday.

Adding single assists were Joe Davis and Chip Crawford.
