A 16-year-old boy drowned Sunday at Lake Juliette in Monroe County.The full release from public information officer Allison Selman-Willis of the Monroe County sheriff’s department follows:A Perry teenager drowned this afternoon, March 20, 2011, at Lake Juliette in Monroe County.Joseph Conyor Davenport, believed to be 16 years of age, was fishing with family and friends at the cove at Dames Ferry Boat Ramp. Joseph, who was not wearing a life vest, attempted to swim from the west bank of the cove to the east bank near the boat ramp but struggled and went under the water. Witnesses attempted to rescue the teenager but were unsuccessful. A 911 call was made to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office around 4 p.m. in the afternoon and Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, MC Emergency Services, Department of Natural Resources and the Bibb County Dive Team responded to the scene. The teenager’s body was recovered around 7 p.m. by the Bibb County Dive Team and has been transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta.
