‘The Guitar and the Poets’ is tonight

The Griffin Choral Arts community chorus, directed by Dr. Stephen J. Mulder, will present a choral concert, ‘The Guitar and the Poets’ Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Griffin First United Methodist Church. The chorus will be accompanied by professional guitarist William Hearn. This is the final concert of GCA’s fourth season and the 16th concert presented since fall 2007. Tickets are $10 general admission at the door or in advance in Griffin at Artistic Flowers and Gifts and The Tiger Lily; in Barnesville at Goggans Florist; in Zebulon at A Novel Experience bookstore; and in Thomaston at the TUAC Gallery. ‘The aim is to show poetry and music aren’t necessarily separate art forms but are one and the same,’ said Mulder. ‘This concert may well be the most comprehensively unified program in the artistic history of Griffin Choral Arts.’ The evening features two major works for guitar and chorus. The first, Romancero Gitano by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, uses the romantic Spanish poetry of Frederico Garcia Lorca. The second work, A Procession Winding Around Me by Jeffrey Van, is a setting of four Civil War poems by Walt Whitman. Dramatic readings of the original poems will precede the musical performances. ”˜The Guitar and the Poets’ highlights all the features of the stringed instrument and the voices as they sing compelling lyrics that often comment directly on the intercommunication of all these instruments,’ he said. The concert is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts. GCA also receives support from its partner agency, the National Endowment for the Arts. Griffin Choral Arts is composed of singers from all over the region. Many are music teachers at the elementary, middle, secondary or college level.
