Thomas Eugene “Gene” Scoggins

Thomas Eugene “Gene” Scoggins, age 64 of Barnesville, Ga., formerly of Manchester, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at his residence. Gene was born December 28, 1953 in LaGrange, Ga. the son of the late James Thomas Scoggins and Helen Clark Scoggins. He lived most of his life in Manchester before moving to Barnesville after the deaths of his parents. Despite suffering injuries in falling from a tree stand while deer hunting at age 15, which left him paralyzed, Gene persevered and became a 1971 graduate of Manchester High School. He attended North Georgia Technical College in Clarksville and became self-employed in the watch and jewelry repair business. He was a member of Manchester First Baptist Church and prior to his declining health, enjoyed fishing and collecting stamps. Gene did not let his disability limit what he wanted to do or accomplish. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his grandparents, Maude and Kiser Clark and E. B. and Flora Scoggins, and a nephew, Britton Cauthen. He is survived by his sisters, Hedy Cauthen (Gerald) of Barnesville, Pam Robertson (Jim) of Fayetteville, and a brother Dan Scoggins (Charlotte) of Columbus; a niece, Anna Waters (John); nephews, Chris Cauthen (Jessamy), Blane Cauthen, Alan Scoggins (Carey), and Matt Stonica (Maranda). Also several great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Graveside funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20 at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in St. Marks, Ga. with Rev. Dan Crawford officiating. Flowers will be accepted or those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, Warm Springs, Ga.; the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association, Barnesville, Ga.; or a favorite charity.
