Three charities, one agenda: Christmas for kids

By Sherri Ellington Hope Tree Ministries is again reaching out to the community to ask for donations of new and gently used toys for more than 20 children whose parents have asked the ministry to help. Hope Tree founder Rev. Jimmy Fambro asks donors to buy or clean gently used toys and drop them by the First Baptist Church between 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or send a monetary donation to P.O. Box 782, Barnesville, 30204 by Dec. 20. For information call 678-972-2457. The plan is to deliver toys on Dec. 21, 22 and 23. Toys for Tots, run by Marine Corps League 1196 of Griffin, is for children ages 1-11. Pick up day for donated new, unused toys will be Saturday, Dec. 22, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the LCAC. Since it expects to serve many children all through the region, Toys for Tots is doing some major fundraising right up until toy giveaway day, including last weekend’s Atlanta Festival Ballet performances of The Nutcracker at the schools’ Fine Arts Center. The Marine Corps League is also raffling off two Delta round trip tickets to anywhere in the lower 48 states or Canada for $10 each or three for $20. All the proceeds will go for Toys for Tots. Collection boxes are out at the schools and Three Doors Down and more are being sought. To get a box, call 770-364-0070 or 770-358-7345. Empty Stocking Fund organizers had its biggest fundraiser, the Business After Hours, last Thursday. There is also an angel tree at Slices. Drop off a new unwrapped toy or pick a tag off the tree and bring the toy back to Slices to receive a free beverage. Firefighters are also holding boot drives each Saturday until Christmas and ESF is seeking churches, Sunday School classes, offices or families to adopt children. Call organizer Vicki Forsyth at 770-584-6096 for information. Pick up day for toys will be Saturday, Dec. 22, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. for Toys for Tots and 10-11:30 a.m. for ESF at the Lamar County Activity Center.
