The Lamar County Trojans went to Jackson Friday night, built a fragile 13-0 lead then nearly lost it down the stretch but held on to beat the Red Devils 13-6.
The Trojans managed only 180 total yards: 20 passing and 160 rushing. They held the Red Devils to -13 rushing yards but saw their secondary get shredded for 216 yards. Jackson quarterback Canaan Bernhardt was 18 for 25 for 216 yards and Jackson’s only TD in the fourth quarter. LC blocked the PAT attempt.
Trojan quarterback Ross Hamrick turned in a gutsy performance,completing two of five passes for 20 yards. He also led the team in rushing with 15 carries for 52 yards.
AJ Vereen added seven carries for 36 yards. Other rushers (carries-yards) were: Kenyae Barnes (2-31), Kaden Carter (11-22) and Jayden Hillman (6-17).
The Trojans missed the breakaway speed of Caleb Laster in both the backfield and defensive secondary. Laster is out with a torn ACL. He hopes to return for track season.
