Trojan soccer teams secure playoff berths

By Ken K. Green Lamar County secured berths in the GHSA Class AA state soccer playoffs with their recent play including a sweep of matches against Bleckley County here Friday night. Now both squads have their sights on winning the region championship and hosting first round playoff matches for the first time in school history. The Trojans are 5-5 overall but boast a 3-1 region record after beating Bleckley on penalty kicks Friday night. Cullen Bennett kept the Royals from scoring in regulation and the two five minute overtime periods. Tyler Treadwell, Dylan Johnson and Justin Dobbins netted goals for Lamar as the Trojans took the penalty kick period 3-1 for the match win. The Lady Trojans are 6-4 overall and 4-1 in region play. Sydney Tenney’s three goal hat trick paced the way for Lamar’s 5-0 win over Bleckley Friday. Brailey Davis and Abby Gutierrez added one goal each in what coach Wayne Calvert called the team’s best performance of the season. Both teams also played non-region matches at Woodland in Stockbridge with the girls losing a hard fought 1-0 decision while the boys were outscored 5-1. Lamar hosts Mary Persons for non-region matches today beginning at 5:30 p.m. before taking the rest of the week off while the junior varsity hosts the JV Trojan Cup. Next week the two squads play at Monticello Tuesday before hosting region leading Putnam County Friday. Putnam beat Lamar’s girls 2-1 in Eatonton while the Trojans lost to the War Eagles 6-1. Lamar can claim region titles by beating Monticello and Putnam. The Lady Trojans would need to win over Putnam by two goals while the Trojans will need to make up a five goal difference.
