Trojan tennis team makes school history

The Lamar County boys tennis team served up another first in school history as they beat Dodge County here in the first round of the GHSA AA tournament to advance to the Sweet 16. Lamar’s Andre Dalianas defeated Steven Zhang 6-2, 6-0 in the number one singles match while Brett Baines played a three-setter against Daniel Fordham and won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at number two. The Trojans third singles player Thomas Davis was unable to better Jacob Danforth, falling 1-6, 4-6. In doubles, Jacob and Joseph McClain clinched the team win by defeating Tyler Bennett and Josh Coleman 6-4, 6-1. The second doubles team of Ralph Horton and Billy Gibson split sets with Jason McLean and Mark Edwards 6-3, 4-6 and did not play a deciding set. After battling the wind against Dodge County, The Trojans traveled to Nahunta and battled the south Georgia heat and Brantley County (17-4). The Herons, the number one seed from Region 2-AA and the sixth ranked team in the state, made short work of Lamar, winning the match 0-5. The Trojans, who finish the season with a 12-6 mark, will lose six of seven starters to graduation. On the girls side, the Lady Trojans traveled to Cochran to take on third ranked Bleckley County in the first round and lost 0-5. The Lamar girls (4-14) are expected to return all of their starters as they are underclassmen.
