Trojans are state champs

The Trojans won the state championship in track Saturday afternoon at the state track meet in Jefferson. The win couldn’t have come in more dramatic fashion. Going into the final event, the 4×400 meter relay, Lamar was in second place with 71 points. The leader, Westminster School, had 72.5. The Trojan team – made up of the four seniors who have brought so much glory to the school in their careers, Lawrence Austin, Qua Searcy, Tyler Scandrett and Lance Austin – turned in a school record time of 3:22 to finish third. The Westminster squad was 7th and the Trojans had the school’s first ever state title in track. Earlier Saturday, the Trojan 4X100 team won the state title but did not better its new record time set Friday. Lance Austin was third overall in the 100 meters. Lawrence Austin was first in the 110 meter hurdles. Lance then added a third place finish in the 200 meters. Lawrence then repeated as state champ in the 300 meter hurdles with a PR. That set up the critical final event and the Trojans gutted it out.
