Lamar County traveled to Savannah Saturday for their first ever appearance in the GHSA state quarterfinals.End 1st quarter: Laney 16, Lamar 15. Halftime: Laney 36, Lamar 24.End 3rd quarter: Laney 54, Lamar 39.Final: Laney 75, Lamar 52.Realtime scoring from the game by Walter Geiger.The Trojans (27-3), winners of 15 straight and ranked eighth in the state in the GACA Class AA coaches poll, fell to Laney (27-1), the number two seed from 3AA and ranked number five in the state. The Wildcats, from Augusta, reached the Elite Eight by beating Cook, 51-32, in the first round of the state tournament and Tatnall County, 67-58, in round two. First year head coach Jerry Hunter’s team is led by a pair of 6-2 senior forwards, Rod Hall and Corinthian Brown. Hall scored 32 points against Tatnall and Brown had 17 against Cook. Laney won 25 consecutive games before falling to Swainsboro in the 3AA tournament championship. Until then they had been ranked as high as second in the state. This is the 15th trip for Laney to the state tournament dating back to 1970. They reached the Final Four of last year’s tourney. The Wildcats have been to the semi-finals twice and this is their third trip to the quarterfinals. The Lamar/Laney winner advances to the Final Four at the Macon Coliseum Thursday at 5:30 p.m. where they will meet Buford. The unranked Wolves upset number three South Atlanta, 47-44, Friday in Rome. The Trojans and Wildcats game tipped-off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Savannah State University. Other AA Elite Eight games to be played played at Savannah State on Saturday include Northeast Macon vs. Dodge County (girls) at four o’clock, Morgan County vs. Laney (girls) at seven o’clock and Swainsboro vs. Thomasville (boys) at 8:30 p.m.
