Trojans fall just short

The Lamar County Trojans shut out top ranked Calhoun in the 2nd half but could not make enough plays and fell 21-14 in the Class AA state playoffs. Lamar had a shot at the end but a last pass was intercepted in the endzone. The game may have set a record for the most Lamar fans to ever attend a road contest. Afterwards, almost every Calhoun fan congratulated Lamar on their effort – the best turned in against the Yellow Jackets in two years. After the game, Trojan head coach Frankin Stephens lamented the quality of the officiating while addressing his team. Lamar had an 80-yard TD run by Lawrence Austin called back on its first possession after a phantom block in the back call. The call changed the momentum for a long period. Stephens, however, was expressed pride in his team. ”That was a championship effort. You came in here with 35 players and went against 105 players and gave them all they wanted. In the end, we just did not make enough plays. At the beginning of the season, if someone had said this team was going to the semifinals, nobody outside this group right here would have believed it,” Stephens told his team. Realtime scoring from the game was provided by Walter Geiger. 5:59 1st. qtr.: Calhoun 7-0. Lamb 1-yd. run PAT good. 9:13 2nd qtr.: Lamar 7 Calhoun 7: Jeremy Fletcher 18- yd. TD run.
