Trojans host soap scrimmage Friday

By Ken K. Green The Trojan football team continues preparation for the upcoming season with full pad workouts each day after school this week. The annual soap game is set for Friday at Trojan Field. This year’s soap game will be a little different from those in year’s past. Due to a reduced number of players on this year’s roster, head coach Franklin Stephens has decided to go with a controlled intrasquad scrimmage much like the spring game. Also, due to a smaller number of freshmen players and middle school practice just starting Monday, there will be no middle school/ninth grade scrimmage. Open to the public, the soap game will start at 5 p.m. and fans are asked to donate powdered or liquid detergent at the gate to help with the team’s laundry needs through the season. After five days of padless drills during the Georgia High School Associationmandated heat and humidity acclimation period, the Trojans donned full gear for practices Wednesday through Saturday. Coach Stephens says practice is going well as the team is working to improve its fundamentals and overall knowledge of schemes. ’We’re installing special teams as well as improving on conditioning,’ Stephens said. Fans who cannot make it to the games will have three options to keep up with the Trojans on Friday nights this fall. Along with the Herald Gazette’s popular real time scoring updates online at barnesville. com, the games will be broadcast online by Thomaston radio station WTGA FM at Terrell Moody and Skip Seda will call the action for WTGA. Lamar County will host Upson-Lee for a pre-season scrimmage next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The season opener is Friday, Aug. 31 at Griffin’s Memorial Stadium against Spalding High. The home opener is a week later as the Trojans host Eagle’s Landing.
