Trojans host spring scrimmage Friday

By Ken K. Green Lamar County High School wraps up two weeks of spring football practice with a controlled session Friday at Trojan Field. The practice is set for 5 p.m. and open to the public. There are 58 players in grades 8-11 taking part in drills this spring. ’Our numbers will not allow us to split into separate teams for an intrasquad game,’ said Lamar head football coach Franklin Stephens. ‘We’re still looking to increase numbers within the program in grades 7-12 for the fall.’ The Trojans are emphasizing player knowledge, fundamentals and technique this spring. ’We’d like to improve overall practice tempo and efficiency,’ said Stephens. Focus is also being placed on improving and developing overall mental and physical toughness. Depth is a concern and the Trojan coaching staff must find players at some key positions including fullback, wingback, offensive tackle, corner back, defensive end and linebacker. Stephens also announced the team will host AAAA Stone Mountain High School for its pre-season scrimmage Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. The regular season opener is Friday, Aug. 30, against Spalding at Trojan Field.
