Trojans, Lady Trojans headed to soccer playoffs

By Ken K. Green The Lamar County Lady Trojan soccer team came up just short of winning the Region 4-AA championship falling 2-1 to Putnam County Friday night at Trojan Field. The Lamar girls set up the championship match with a 5-0 win in Monticello and also played to a 4-4 tie at Peach County. Lamar took 15 shots on goal in the first half at Monticello but could not find the back of the net as the game was knotted at 0-0 at intermission. The match turned in the second half when the Lady Trojans were fouled in the goalie box and Brailey Davis scored on the awarded penalty kick. The Lady Trojans went on to get two goals by Katie Jo Daniel and one goal each by Alexis Bedgood and Sydney Tenney for a 5-0 win. In Fort Valley, Lamar faced a very physical Peach County team but fought to a 4-1 lead at the half. After the half, Lady Trojan coach Wayne Calvert decided to substitute for some of his top players to rest them for Friday’s game against Putnam and Peach took advantage outscoring Lamar 3-0 in the second half and the match ended in a four-all tie. Bedgood had a pair of goals for Lamar while Daniel and Tenney scored one goal each. Needing to beat eighth ranked Putnam by two goals to claim the region title, the Lady Trojans found themselves down a goal eight minutes into the match as the Lady War Eagles scored on a breakaway. The momentum of the game teetered back and forth and Tenney tied the match with 12 minutes to play in the first half. The second half was again a see-saw battle with most of the action at midfield but Putnam scored again on another breakaway with 12 minutes left in regulation and endured Lamar’s pressure the rest of the way for a 2-1 win. Lamar will finish the regular season Friday hosting Macon County at Trojan Field and will enter the state tournament as the region’s number two seed hosting the number three seed from Region 1-AA in the first round. *************** The Trojan soccer team still has an outside chance of winning Region 4-AA but they need some help to do so. Lamar needed to beat Putnam County by six goal Friday night to earn the region championship but came up short as they were only able to record a 4-1 win over the War Eagles. Putnam hosts Monticello Friday and a win by the Hurricanes would give the Trojans first place in the region. Putnam beat Monticello 5-1 earlier this season in Monticello. The Lamar boys also beat the Hurricanes in Monticello 3-1 and losing a non-region match to Peach County 2-0 in Fort Valley. The regular season ended for the Trojans in Jackson last night and they now prepare to host a first round state playoff game against a yet to be determined opponent from Region 1-AA.
