Trojans, Lady Trojans take region soccer titles

By Ken K. Green Lamar County claimed both the girls and boys 4-AA championships last week, sweeping matches from Monticello and Putnam County to stay perfect in region play. The Lady Trojans and Trojans close out the regular season this week with both teams hosting Peach County Thursday and the girls entertaining Macon County Friday. Lamar will open the GHSA state tournament at home May 1 against the fourth seeds from Region 2-AA. The Trojans clinched their championship, defeating Monticello 6-3. Chase Bennett scored a three-goal hat trick for the Lamar while Tyler Scandrett, Jacob Seo and Cullen Bennett netted one goal each. The Lady Trojans completed the sweep of Monticello, taking an 8-0 first half lead and coasting to a 10-0 win. Katie Jo Daniel, Sydney Tenney, Alexis Bedgood and Brailey Davis all had goals in the match. The Lamar girls won their region title with a hard fought 4-3 victory over Putnam in Eatonton. Putnam took a one goal lead eight minutes into the match on a penalty kick. Lamar answered with a goal by Daniel five minutes later. Putnam regained the lead only to see Tenney feed Kayleigh Swanson a crossing pass the freshman tapped in for a two-all tie at intermission. Putnam again took a lead early in the second half. Davis knotted the match again, taking the ball from 30 yards out, making a move to get past a defender and faking the goalkeeper out of position before putting the ball in the net with 17 minutes to play in regulation. The two teams continued to battle and it looked as if the match was headed to extra time. Daniel broke through the Putnam defense and scored with 2:30 left on the clock to give the Lady Trojans their first lead. The Lamar girls spent the rest of the game sending the ball forward to prevent a shot on goal and hung on for the win and the championship. The Trojans kept their perfect region record intact with a 4-3 win over the War Eagles. Lamar trailed at the half 1-0 and fell behind 2-0 early in the second half. Chase and Scandrett scored to even up the game within 10 minutes. Putnam regained the lead before Chase scored two more goals, the last with less than six minutes left, for the lead and the win.
