Trojans, Pirates square off in region tournament tonight

The Lamar County Trojans will play host to the Pike Pirates tonight in the first round of the Region 5AA basketball playoffs. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at the LCCHS gym. The Trojans, coached by Kenny Walker, could use a postseason spark after struggling through a tough season. Lamar is 6-19 overall and 3-13 in region action. The Pirates have had an even poorer season. Coach Mark Andrews’ squad is 2-23 overall and 2-14 in region play. The teams split two regular season match-ups. Lamar won 55-32 on January 9 while Pike won 52-48 on February 3. The Lady Trojans, coached by Brandee Murrah, travel to Columbus for the first round of the tournament Tuesday, Feb. 17. They play Spencer at 4 p.m. A win would propel them to a second round matchup with Heard County at 7 p.m. Thursday in Manchester. The Lady Trojans are 6-19 overall and 4-12 in region play. Murrah reported her star, Timonica Holmes, was voted first team all-region. Amanda Moreland made the all-region honorable mention list.
