Another “first time in school history” for the Lamar County basketball team as the Trojans held off Albany, 63-55, in the second round of the GHSA AA state basketball tournament Wednesday night in front of a packed, roaring crowd at the LCCHS gymnasium to punch their ticket to the Elite Eight in Savannah.Camden Foster scored 23 points and Quintavious Lackey added 15 to lead Lamar but Maurice Bloodser’s drive to the basket for a clutch lay up while getting fouled with less then five minutes to play may have been the icing on the cake for the Trojans. Lamar County (27-3), ranked eighth in the state in the GACA coaches poll and winners of 15 straight, will take on Laney of Augusta in the quarterfinal round Saturday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at Savannah State University. The Wildcats, 27-1 and ranked fifth in the state, beat Tatnall County, 67-58, in Reidsville Wednesday to earn their berth in the Elite Eight.
