Trojans scrimmage Hornets tonight

The football season got off to a great start for the Lamar County Trojans last week and things ramp up tonight as Lamar hosts South Atlanta in the first of two preseason scrimmages. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Trojan Field. UPDATE: THE TROJANS LOST 21-10. Events began Thursday with the ‘˜Meet the Trojans Night’ event sponsored by the Gridiron Club. Family members got to meet the players and mingle with varsity cheerleaders, coaches, managers and their families. The hitting began Friday night with a scrimmage at Trojan Field featuring the high school and middle school players. Head coach Bryan Love and his staff minimized downtime by having the middle school drive in one direction. When their 8-10 play session was done, the varsity was ready to go in the other direction. The offense was successful on several drives, according to coach Love who singled out good work by running backs Malik Banks, Tyrek McDowell, Enrico Harden and Andruw O’Neal. He noted multiple receivers were targeted, including Tae Holiday, Sean Smith, Jaylund Harris and Jonah Stout. Malik Collier, who came in at quarterback last year when L.J. Smith went down with a knee injury, appears to be the likely starter there this fall. ”Malik did a good job managing the offense for the first time in our new spread system. Keyland Tyus also stood out blocking on the perimeter on several big gains by our backs,’ coach Love said. Grayson Jett got a few series at quarterback as well and the staff appears happy with the kicking game. ‘Dawson Davis showed on successful extra points and field goals that he will continue to be a great asset for us this year,’ coach Love said. He also credited his offensive line for showing it can be a force up front when Love and offensive coordinator Terrone Owens want to run the ball. On defense, coach Love credited Terry Grier and Issac Cedano for ‘disrupting things in the backfield’ at times and noted Cedric Dumas was ‘a force’ in the middle of the defensive line. ’We primarily played our base defense so we could evaluate players on their technique, assignments and production,’ he added. South Atlanta will come to Trojan Field this Friday night for a scrimmage and the Trojans and their coaches have adapted their ‘˜game week mentality’, according to coach Love. South Atlanta has a new coach in Brad Stephens who came from Stockbridge High and is in his first year as a head coach. The Hornets went 1-9 last season. The Hornets will run the triple option spread offense and play a 4-3 defense. ’I, along with the Gridiron Club and all those in our football program, would like to thank all the fans who came out for the scrimmage last week. We had a great crowd and the bounce house was rocking with kids having a great time while their parents observed our varsity and middle school teams from the stands. We hope the community will come out this Friday night as well and support the Trojans,’ coach Love concluded. In addition to Friday’s action, the LCMS Trojans will scrimmage Henderson at Trojan Field Saturday at 6 p.m.
