LC sports fans will get their fist look at the 2023 Trojan football team tonight when the Monticello Hurricanes come to town for a scrimmage. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Trojan Field.
The Trojans are coming off a 10-2 season last year but must replace superstar linebacker/running back CJ Allen who is now with the Georgia Bulldogs. The ‘Canes went 4-7 last season, their first under head coach Ashley Henderson.
The Trojans have been working hard in the heat all summer in preparation for the season.
“We’ve had a good summer. We are really excited about this year’s team. We have some new faces and some familiar faces that will take the field for us this year. Our players have had a busy summer and have worked very hard,” coach Travis Ellington said.
Over the summer, Ellington brought in new defensive coordinator Tony Dodge who coached at East Laurens last season but has spent most of his career in California.
“The team has done a good job learning the new defense and some new wrinkles we are adding to our offense. We have several young players who are making an impact,” Ellington added.
Scrimmages, especially the first one, are more about evaluation than results and coaches and trainers will be monitoring the heat.
“We are excited about the scrimmage. We will have a chance to get all our kids on the field, get them on film and get them evaluated. We are looking forward to the regular season and are ready to get started,” Ellington said.
The final preseason scrimmage is Aug. 11 at Central Macon. The regular season gets underway Aug. 18 when Wilcox County comes to town.
