By Walter GeigerFootball fans will get their first look at the 2014 Lamar County Trojans when they host the Spalding Jaguars in a scrimmage game Thursday night at Trojan Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.Trojan head coach Jamie Abrams said the scrimmage will be played under game conditions including live kicks and punts for the first half. ‘Our starters will play the first half and some of the third quarter. The backups and the young guys will play the rest of the way,’ Abrams said. The coach has neither released a depth chart nor singled out any individual players for their efforts thus far in preseason camp. Expected offensive starters, based on last year’s final depth chart, are junior L.J. Smith at quarterback with junior Juan Tucker and senior Noah Eure anchoring the backfield. Stalwarts on the line are seniors James Bannister, Rashad Johnson and Chris Elliott.Seniors Micah Banks and Malik Dixson and junior Pippin Davis will lead the defense from their linebacker spots though Davis is out for several weeks with a broken hand.Others expected to contribute heavily are Akeem Colquitt, Alondrick Cole, Marcus Fuller, Larry Dumas, Dilon Treadwell, Steve Sawyer and Connor Jett.Last year saw the Trojans mount the best campaign in school history as they went 14-0 before losing 14-7 to Lovett in the state championship game. The Jags were at the opposite end of the spectrum, going 1-9. The two teams clashed in last year’s season opening contest with the Trojans coming away with a 44-14 win.The Trojans have just one week to fix shortcomings from the scrimmage as they open regular season play Friday, Aug. 27 when the Howard Huskies of Macon roll into Trojan Field. Kickoff for that contest is 7:30 p.m.
