Trojans tune up vs. Knights tonight

By Ken K. Green With the annual Soap Game intra-squad scrimmage in the books, Lamar County now sets its sights on Upson-Lee as the Trojans play host to the Knights for a pre-season scrimmage this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Trojan Field. The game marks the debut of new Trojan head coach Franklin Stephens. After a scoreless first quarter between the junior varsity squads in last year’s preseason scrimmage at Matthews Field in Thomaston, the Trojans scored on every offensive possession but one and the Lamar defense allowed only two first downs in a 37-0 rout of the Knights. The Trojans went on to a historic 12-1 season while the Knights went 6-5. Lamar County and Upson-Lee have never met in a regular season game but did play one other time in a pre-season scrimmage which the Knights won 12-3 in 2003. Thomaston does hold an advantage in regular at Tucker where his teams were a combined 64-6 including two state championships. Upson-Lee is coached by Tommy Watson who, in his sixth season of patrolling the sidelines for the Knights, is 15-26. Admission for Friday’s scrimmage is $7. There will be no advanced sale of discount tickets for this game but that is expected to change for regular season games. Lamar County opens the regular season August 31 at Griffin’s Memorial Stadium against Spalding High. A week later, the Trojans will host Eagle’s Landing. Upson- Lee kicks off its regular season Aug. 31 in Zebulon against Pike County. For realtime scoring from tonight’s scrimmage, check back here often.
