Trojans win, advance to round two

The Lamar County Trojans made an incremental advance from the abyss in which they had been mired for several seasons with a good performance in the Region 4AA tournament last week. They improved to the point that they will host a first round GHSA state tournament game – a feat that seemed highly unlikely last week. Live quarterly scoring updates will be provided from courtside by Walter Geiger. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the local gym. The Trojans started tourney play Tuesday with a 56-32 rout of Bleckley County. They played their way into the title game Friday when they upset Monticello 71-59. That earned them a slot in the title game against the high-ranked Crawford County Eagles who had struggled badly in their Friday night semi. The Eagles were on top of their game Saturday, however, as they led pretty much the entire way in dismantling the Trojans 81-67. Lamar pulled to within 10 points late but had three straight turnovers that resulted in Eagle threepointers and the game slipped away. Obtavious Hampton had a standout game in the final as he finished with 25 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Brice Paster had 13 points, five assists and three rebounds. Tre Lumpkin was also in double figures with 11 points and two assists. Daniel Miller had five points. Quin Alford had four points and five caroms. Askdem Ogletree finished with three points while L.J. Smith had one point and four rebounds. Lamar (11-14) should match up well against the Falcons of East Laurens (15-13) who lost 68-67 to Harlem in the 3AA semis but then toppled Dublin103-96 in the third place game Saturday. The Falcons are led by Marty Lewis who averages just under 20 points per game.
