Two benefits slated for Gavin Lance

The Sportsmen’s Bible Study of Barnesville First Baptist Church is sponsoring a turkey shoot to benefit Gavin Lance Saturday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Ag Center Field on Roberta Drive across from the sheriff’s office. It is one of two upcoming benefits for the local teenager who was severely injured in a car accident. The shoot will allow for shotguns only and shells will be provided. The cost is $2 per shot. Turkeys will be awarded for the best shooter in a group of 10. Lunch and snacks can also be purchased. All monies will benefit Lance. The Holiday Hustle evening 5K fun run is Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Runners are asked to preregister by Dec. 1. People can also sponsor a runner. This year’s race ‘“ the first of its kind ‘“ also benefits Lance and his family. The Triple B’s were formed to walk for Breast Cancer Awareness. Its members are now supporting Lance’s mother Jodi Kidd who walked with them at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day in 2009. ‘Our goal is 200 runners,’ said organizer Kathy Oxford. ‘We’ve added State Farm as a sponsor. They join United Bank in helping us offset some of the costs.’ Oxford encourages Thomaston and Greenwood street residents to put up outside Christmas lights a little early so runners will have added holiday spirit along the route. They are also asked to come out and cheer on the runners. ’Inflatables are the easiest things to put out and we’d love to see the streets along the route lit up with holiday spirit,’ she said. Lance played baseball for the high school as number 14 and the Triple B’s will ask a youth runner to run for someone in their honor or in honor/memory of a loved one. ‘Either way, come out and support all the runners with your flashing lights and holiday spirit,’ she said, There will be prizes for overall winners, both male and female in first through third places in addition to age category winners including first and second male and female. Entry fees for the 5K run or walk are $25 for pre-registered runners and $25 to sponsor a runner. The cost is $35 the night of the race. Long sleeved T-shirts are guaranteed for pre-registered runners. The race route is the same as the certified Barnesville Buggy Days 5K route with the start and finish at Summers Field. ’Runners and walkers should wear reflective clothing and get in the holiday spirit with flashing or blinking lights,’ said Oxford. United Bank also has a fund for Lance and his family set up where donations can be made. Online registration can be found at Mail in registration with checks made out to Kathy Oxford/ Benefit for Gavin Lance, 114 Laurel Dr., Barnesville, 30204. For information call 678-877-9532 or email
