Venable named Provost at GSC

Dr. Margaret Venable has been named Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Gordon State College. Her appointment becomes effective July 1. As Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Venable is the second ranking administrative officer and the chief academic officer of the college. ’With more than 20 years of strong academic service, I’m confident that Dr. Venable will lead our academic enterprise with strength and foresight,’ said Gordon State College President Max Burns. Venable has served as Vice President and CEO, Oconee Campus, University of North Georgia since the January 2013 merger of Gainesville State College and North Georgia College and State University. Prior to that position, she was vice president and CEO, Oconee Campus and professor of chemistry at Gainesville State College. She holds a PhD in science education from Georgia State University, a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s in chemistry from Agnes Scott College. Venable’s faculty experience includes work as assistant, associate and professor of chemistry at Georgia Perimeter College (DeKalb College.) She is a graduate of the University System of Georgia’s Executive Leadership Institute and the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows program. She is a member of the Georgia Academy of Science, American Chemical Society, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Venable’s community involvement includes membership on the board of directors of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce, work as a mentor at Oconee County Middle School, the Oconee County Rotary Club and Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation Board of Directors. ’I am honored to join Gordon State College and participate in the leadership of this fine institution,’ Venable said. ‘I see Gordon State College as an institution with a strong history and excellent potential for the future. I am excited to serve the students, the community and the faculty.’ Venable is the mother of a 15-year-old son, Quentin. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, walking and yoga.
