Veterans celebrated here

The annual Veterans Day celebration was held Monday morning in front of the Memorial at the Barnesville-Lamar County Library. Junior Hamrick, a Korean War vet and commander of the Marion Matthews Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars presided. The Barnesville Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors. Veteran William Parker, 4th District American Legion commander and Purple Heart recipient, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Rev. Dana Overton-Garrett presented both the invocation and benediction. Leon Ross performed Flowers of Scotland on the bagpipes. Air Force veteran and American Legion Post 25 commander Bob Richardson read the names of 32 local veterans who have died since last year’s ceremony. That solemn news was followed by a 21-Gun Salute fired the Lamar County Sheriff’s office Honor Guard. After Taps, the keynote address was presented by Patsy Cates and the assemblage adjourned to the VFW Post Home for dinner prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary.
