Over 500 volunteers are expected to don work clothes and gloves for the Great Day of Service on Saturday, May 12. The event, founded by the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville, has grown exponentially since its inception.A partial list of this year’s projects includes painting the caboose at the Depot.Zachry Construction is doing research, with the help of Shanna English, to ensure its team restores the Depot caboose to its original glory. Other work includes restoration at the Old Jail Museum, Lamar County Activity Center, Senior Citizens Center, Health Department, Barnesville-Lamar County Library and Women’s Clubhouse.Chairman Mark Stone says Chick-fil-A and Truett’s Grill of Griffin have joined other supporters of the event. They include First Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Southern Rivers Energy Operation Roundup, State Farm Insurance and United Bank. The GDOS begins at 8 a.m. May 12 at Lamar County Middle School on Burnette Road.The Great Day of Service will again offer the service of a church nursery for those parents wishing to take part in projects but will need their children watched.Donna Robinson, director of the Barnesville First United Methodist Church children’s program, will oversee the nursery there at the church between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call the church and speak to Amy Jackson to register children for the event.A food collection project has been added to assist that important need within our community. The driveby food collection center will be on the Holmes Street side of the Barnesville-Lamar County Library. Volunteers will pick up boxes and bags of groceries at the donor’s house. At the Ritz Park, the Barnesville-Lamar County Humane Society will hold a Great Day of Adoption.Publicity director Beverly Eskridge said both dogs and cats will be available for good homes and supporting memberships to the society will be available.
