Welch death ruled a suicide

The death of former Lamar County attorney Buddy Welch has been ruled a suicide after a coroner’s inquest in Butts County. Welch, 73, was killed March 23 when his ATV was hit by a southbound Norfolk-Southern train at the Mt. Pleasant Church Road crossing in Flovilla. According to a report issued Aug. 8, Welch parked his ATV on the railroad tracks, ignoring whistles, flashing lights and other warning signals from the train. Welch remained on the tracks, standing by the driver’s side of the ATV facing toward the oncoming engine until he was struck and killed. The incident was captured on video by the train’s onboard system. Welch was a founding partner of the McDonough law firm now known as Smith, Welch, Webb & White. The firm maintains an office in Barnesville. Scott Mayfield of the firm continues to serve as county attorney here.
