Laura West is the 2010 STAR Student at the high school, scoring 2040 on her SAT out of 2400 possible points. She chose English instructor Jane Mitchell as her STAR teacher. West is the daughter of Jimmy and Tina West of Barnesville and the granddaughter of Bud and Mary Ann Hall of Zebulon. In October she attended the 25th annual Georgia Cooperative Youth Conference. An alternate for the 2009 Washington Youth Tour, West is captain of the academic team and a member of the Beta, drama and literary clubs.
