Twenty years ago this week, Tropical Storm Alberto stalled over Barnesville-Lamar County and cried himself to sleep, dropping up to 27 inches of rain in places. It was the 100-year flood we always hear about but never experience. But, we certainly experienced that one. Flooding was rampant. Bridges and entire sections of road were washed out. The dam at the city reservoir on Edie Creek washed away, severely endangering Barnesville’s supply of drinking water. Flooding was even more severe to the south. Macon was paralyzed by floodwaters. Downtown Montezuma was cut off from the rest of the world and, in Albany, burial vaults rose from cemeteries and floated away as the water table rose. What are your memories of the storm?
