What do you remember about the Great Flood of 1994?

Twenty years ago this week, Tropical Storm Alberto stalled over Barnesville-Lamar County and cried himself to sleep, dropping up to 27 inches of rain in places. It was the 100-year flood we always hear about but never experience. But, we certainly experienced that one. Flooding was rampant. Bridges and entire sections of road were washed out. The dam at the city reservoir on Edie Creek washed away, severely endangering Barnesville’s supply of drinking water. Flooding was even more severe to the south. Macon was paralyzed by floodwaters. Downtown Montezuma was cut off from the rest of the world and, in Albany, burial vaults rose from cemeteries and floated away as the water table rose. What are your memories of the storm? Do you have photos? If so, why not share them by submitting them to us for a feature story? Call 770.358.NEWS, drop by our office at 509 Greenwood Street or e-mail news@barnesville.com. We can scan your photos and return them the same day if you drop them by the office. We look forward to hearing from you.
