Will you vote in a tax break for seniors?

Voters will be able to decide this fall whether to give senior citizens age 70 and older a break on their school property taxes. After being approved by the school board, county commission and Georgia General Assembly, a special election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, asking voters: ‘Shall the Act be approved which provides a homestead exemption from Lamar County school district ad valorem taxes for educational purposes in the amount of $7,000 of the assessed value of the homestead after a specified five-year phasein period for residents of that school district who are 70 years of age or older?’ Anyone who is not registered to vote and but wants to register for the special election can do so through the close of business on Monday, Oct. 7, at the elections board office. Advance voting will be held Monday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Nov. 1. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on election day. If approved, the new Lamar Elderly tax exemption would take effect in 2014.
